London: After the defeat ending a summer of gripping cricket - captain Rahul Dravid has said, he will write of the poor standard of umpiring in his captain's report.
Sachin Tendulkar had made half his team's runs when this moment arrived - Andrew Flintoff steamed in, there was a noise, England appealed, the Master shook his head and looked up in horror as Aleem Dar's dreaded finger was up. It was a glaring error.
Tendulkar trudged off an English cricketing arena for the last time in despair. Even in the dressing room he couldn't overcome the disappointment.
"We can't do anything about it but we will mention it in our reports. But we are overly extremely disappointed at Sachin's dismissal - he was batting well and was in great form. And if one partnership had worked then we could have reached 250," said Dravid.
This was Dar's second howler of the game. Earlier, Dravid himself had been a victim of his misjudgement - given out off Flintoff for a duck.
"Generally you know when you have nicked it, I just felt that I didn't have it. But maybe I just sort of slipped it , slipped my mind but came back there and can't argue with the decision," said Dravid.
These decisions at Lord's were just a continuation of what had been a summer of umpiring errors - Tendulkar himself had suffered at the hands of the umpires in both the Tests and One-Dayers - once cruelly on 99 at Bristol.
The English skipper though chose to play down the debate.
"Umpiring is a very difficult job and the pressure in today's game is immense and they do the best they can. They get it right but then they don't at some other times. So, I have got complaints against them," said Paul Collingwood.
The umpiring during this series has been poor and grand finale at the Lord's was no different. With concerns expressed from all quarters, the debate on the roll of technology while umpiring will only gain momentum.
