Mumbai: Former Pakistani coach Bob Woolmer will be remembered on Tuesday. It is his first death anniversary.
"We have decided to write a sepcial letter to Mrs. Woolmer on this occasion. I have asked my office to draft a letter for this," Shafqat Naghmi, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) CEO said from Lahore.
Woolmer's wife Gill or sons were not prepared to describe how they would remember him or pass the day without him but Gill did say her only wish was to organise a benefit match between Pakistan and India, or with any other country as opponents, but was not met by the PCB, due to a packed international calendar.
"We have paid all his dues," Naghmi confirmed. However, the Sitara-e-Imtiaz civil award which was announced on his untimely death by Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf has not yet been conferred to him, it is learnt.
Sitara-e-Imtiaz is the third highest honour given to a civilian or military personnel in Pakistan. Sitara-e-Imtiaz, which translates as the star of excellence, is an honour given by the Government of Pakistan to both the military and civilians. It is awarded for distinguished merit in the fields of literature, arts, sports, medicine, or science for civilians.
Woolmer was the most highly regarded cricket coach in the world. Sadly at the age of 59, he lost his life in West Indies during last year World Cup on this day, following Pakistan's shock exit from the World Cup. Even the Scotland Yard agency could not resolve the mystery behind his death.
