Kingston: A top police investigator defended a probe into the death of Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer in Jamaica, dismissing accusations that authorities were hasty in declaring he was murdered.

Jamaica Deputy Police Commissioner Mark Shields told the inquest into Woolmer's death on Wednesday that authorities conducted a fair and thorough homicide investigation after a government pathologist ruled the 58-year-old coach had been strangled.

"We looked at everything as a whole," Shields said.

Woolmer was found unconscious in a Kingston hotel room on March 18, a day after Pakistan was upset by Ireland at the Cricket World Cup. Four days later, a government pathologist ruled that he had been strangled, launching a globe-spanning murder investigation.

In an embarrassing reversal, Jamaican police announced nearly three months after launching the probe that Woolmer was not the victim of foul play.

Jamaica's pathologist, Dr Ere Sheshiah, maintains that Woolmer died of pesticide poisoning and asphyxia, but several foreign experts concluded that Woolmer died from natural causes, most likely heart disease.

Independent tests recently completed on stomach samples from Woolmer found no traces of a potentially deadly pesticide, casting more doubt on the earlier findings.

On Tuesday, Shields testified there was no evidence linking Woolmer's death to match-fixing at the cricket tournament.
