Vengsarkar lauds Dhoni for historic win

Mumbai: Chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar has praised One-Day captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's contributions to his team's cause during their first ever series win in Sri Lanka.
"The Indian skipper not only handled the team well but also showed how top class spinners have to be played. He played two knocks in this tournament which should never be forgotten. He showed everyone how Ajantha Mendis has to be tackled," he has been quoted as saying in the Mid-Day.
"I expected the team to score 20 or 30 runs more. I was not happy with the way in-form Raina got out. With the form that he is in, he should have gone on to get a hundred. I think the boys were at least 20 to 30 runs short but the bowlers did a splendid job to defend the total," Vengsarkar added.
The former skipper also felt Dhoni's decision to skip the Test series had paid off.
"The rest helped him to approach the ODI series with a fresh mind. The break must have helped him a lot. He was very clear in his thinking and led superbly," Vengsarkar observed.
Speaking about the 46-run victory, which helped the Indians to clinch the five-match series 3-1, Vengsarkar said that this was one of the best overseas wins.
"It is a big achievement to beat Sri Lanka in their own den. This is outstanding stuff because the manner in which they did it was really splendid as they came back from being 0-1 down to win the series 3-1," he pointed out.
Dhoni on the other hand achieved his second important ODI win abroad after winning the CB series tri-nation series in Australia earlier in the year.
