Tough to wear champions' crown

I am reminded of 1983. The epic win in the World Cup transformed the face of Indian cricket no doubt but consistency took a heavy beating. Read The Article

Vorshal Tough to wear champions'' crown

If you are a real champion, you somehow don''t find that tough! For example, take the 70s-80s West Indies team or the current Australian team or the Bradman''s team. If they had just one loss, they would come back that much harder!

It is only true - tough to wear, if you had a somewhat of a fluke win - a chance factor!

Many teams have won various tournaments, but they would only be what can be considered aberrations - the best team on that day!

India had a good all-round team in 1983. We don''t have all-rounders of that calibre any more. Also, India has always been a weak bowling team, poor batting against fast and short pitched bowling and sub-standard fielding. And, when we win, we go to the roof-top!

We have won two big tournament and some others. But, regretfully, we were neve a champion team! So, there is never going to be that question - tough to wear the crown.

Thank you. ( Posted: Saturday , October 06, 2007 at 06:30 )
ryan It seems like everyone in India, cowland is a self-declared cricket expert..You win one "baseball" style tournament, and hey India is the best team, you go crazy,, come on its totally pathetic, look at the Australians, they have won so many world cups and that too convincingly, you think they are jumping up and down like yo-yos.. No we see on how the team can be improved and what can be done next..

U red Indians have nothing other than cricket, In australia, fine we lost the baseball tournament, but hey we got a national rugby team, a strong mens and hockey team, great tennis players, great football team, great olympic team, great basketball team, need I go on..

My advice to all you Indians, learn to act sensibly and not emotionally, learn to view things as they are and not how you would want them to be, hopefully by doing this, one day in the far away future, you may win against bangladesh and reach the finals of a world cup..

Ohh sorry as for winning the world cup, well as long you have the great cricketing board of BCCI,, forget it.. ( Posted: Tuesday , October 02, 2007 at 17:00 )
more S Balakrishnan Nothing original in the views expressed by Sandip. I think the fear that the youngsters would get carried away by the success in the T20 world cup is absolutely misplaced. These cricketers are grown up and not 15 year old kids.To me Yuvraj, Gambhir, Uthappa,Sreesanth and RP Singh have the energy, the self confidence and the motivation to succeed in the shorter versions of the game.Plus, to my mind they seem to be playing for the side all the time, never mind if they play the odd extravagant stroke or bowl the odd full toss in trying to york the batsman. Chandresh Very good article and perspective by Patil. ( Posted: Monday , October 01, 2007 at 20:02 )
sreevatsan This will be case as long as India sport become very consistent and the format for any World cup is to win foru matches in a row and then win the champion.None is surprised if Srilanka or Australia wins any tournment because they deserve to win the tournment and in the case of India some luck on the day wins the matches. Prem Raja Very well written by Patil....easy to read, and clearly presented. These extravagant cash incentives need not be given. They could rather be used to serve the needy in India. In USA, the NBA players constantly participate in community events, where they help out the less previleged to read, etc.. Such themes are very healthy for players and society. It also gives us an oppurtunity to see the human side of players.. ( Posted: Monday , October 01, 2007 at 17:29 )
Sanjay N A sensible and valuable article from Sandeep. I have a feeling that some of our youngsters will learn the hard way. Today''s youth has a little too much arrogance just as yesteryear''s were a touch too timid. Going back to the aftermath of the ''83 win and Windies'' immediate revenge, we went onto a great 4 year run that ended with defeat in the ''87 WC semi. In between, we won an exciting one off 1985 World Championship in Oz, and the Asia cup. We had a terrific team for the ''87 WC and we really should have defended our crown sucessfully oh home turf.
