Johannesburg: The first-ever Twenty20 World Championship began in South Africa on Tuesday. The latest version of cricket has generated a lot of excitement not only among the fans but also among the players.
"West Indies are the favourites. A lot of competitive teams are here and everyone is looking to be the best. We want to enjoy and make the best use of it," explosive Windies opener Chris Gayle said.
New Zealand pacer Shane Bond, who is expected to be one of the stars of the tournament, said that bowlers would find Twenty20 very challenging.
"Oh it is very unfair. It is good fun and obviously it is a challenge and it is of three hours so from the bowling point of view it is quite awesome," Bond said.
"We will be very competitive all the time. In Twenty20 cricket it is the team of the day that has a few players who come out on top which will walk away with glory," England's Kevin Pietersen said.
The English team is coming to South Africa after a hard-fought One-Day series win against India.
"It all unfolds. It is not a game that I have not played a lot and the Australian team is still learning and we have had a few practice games and we have learnt a bit from them. So I hope that helps us coming in to the tournament," Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds said.
"The playing field is pretty equal. On any given day a guy can run in and take wickets and on any given day a batter can hit two or three out of the ground and win it for his team. So in the shorter version of the game and as the duration of the game gets shorter, it gets even," South Africa wicketkeeper/batsman Mark Boucher said.
