krish	Before this test, Sunny made a comment saying Kapil will never again get a test Fifty. This was supposedly to fire up Kapil. After the test match, Gavaskar relinquished captaincy and made himself unavailable for the West Indies tour that was to follow - a tour that was subsequently cancelled. varadharajan	Dr You took me back to my younger days i was in the ground when this match was on .I can still remember the way Sandeep patil scored those runs with Thundering shots to the rope i was sitting with my Father in D stand with Sugar cane in my Hand .If possible pl write about England match held at Chennai during 1980 in which Vishy scored 222. Hemant Kapre	It is such a pleasure to remember these recollections from Dr.Puri. It takes me back to another age when cricket was simpler but was still a supreme test of sporting skills. Dr. Puri - I wonder if you remember one bit of trivia from this match (though I was a schoolboy then, this bit stayed in my mind !) - Miandad was out cutting and was caught by Vengsarkar in the gully. When it was the "Colonel''s" turn, he was out similarly caught in the gully and Miandad caught him ! It wasn''t a great series for the Colonel apart from his matchsaving 146* at the Kotla (which could well have been a match winner had he not delayed the victory charge till too late !) S.Balaji	One more trivia . Wasim Raja played well in 2nd innings. It was a strokeful innings despite the deficit . Wasim , the elder brother of Ramiz Raja was a respected cricketer those days for his gentle approach & a cool temperament. Unlike other violent members like Javed, Sarfraz etc, this man was very decent . Sad, this guy passed away recently. Sikander Bhakt created sensation in Delhi earlier by taking most of the wickets in first innings ! He ran through the Indian batting & only Vengsarkar offered some resistance. So , we were keen to see how the Indians especially Sunny handle his bowling. Sunny never disappointed us ! He scored many boundaries and many of them were his penchant STRAIGHT DRIVES ( or ) BOWLER’s BACKFOOT DRIVE . I remember Sikander even admitting ( after the match ) that he bowled too fullish to one of the best batsman in the world & he got punished severely in this test. This guy had a superstition ….. After bowling his first delivery, he will handover his sweater to the Umpire ! Poor Sikander soon lost his place . Indians faced the likes of Tahir Naqqash etc. The kind of pounding the 3 famous trio of Bedi, Pras & Chandra got from Zaheer the previous series in Pakistan, we were just hoping that Zaheer fails miserably this tour. It so happened that Zaheer failed the entire tour & was one of the bitter disappointments of this Pak tour. Everyone went back with bitter memores of this tour. Asif made a sensational attempt to win the final test in Calcutta but a runout at a crucial moment saved India from an embarrassment . We called it a revenge series . Unfortunately, we faced the same reversal when we toured in 1982 . India lost 0-3 . Sunny lost his captaincy to Kapil. India toured Westindies. And world cup followed . India created history ! S.Balaji	Hi Wandering A & all Yes. Sandeed did play in Chennai. My memory slipped a bit ! Sorry. Before this test, we had huge expectations on his debut and were delighted to see him. Though Sandeep scored just few runs, he made enough impact as his approach was very convincing. Sandeep scored around 60++ in the next match. Was it Calcutta ? After this next test, India toured Australia . Sandeep was magnificent there .We all thought he will become another star player but he faded away afer the 83 worldcup. Sad Coming to the Chennai test again, another interesting rather sensational moment was ,Dilip Doshi slamming Imran Khan for a couple of boundaries !! That definitely must have hurt the Khan''s ego ! Dilip Doshi was often considered Imran''s bunny and this moment was really a fun riot ! Javed Miandad was a bit consistent in this series & he always targetted Doshi for getting singles into twos . Doshi, I remember never threw the ball . rather he used to roll his arm over while sending from the 3rd man or fine leg. ( Posted: Friday , February 22, 2008 at 11:28 )
Krish	Amazing there are so many that are able to recollect all those details - Particularly ''The Wandering Albatross'' who seems to remember every minute detail. Prasad	Dear Dr.Puri, Thanks very much for a wonderful article. I guess Gavaskar had scored 221 runs while chasing a target of 438 runs. India was bowled out for 429 runs. We have been defeated by only 9 runs which rankled Gavaskar to no end. Hope you agree with me in this regard. ( Posted: Thursday , February 21, 2008 at 18:03 )
