Kolkata: As Kolkata celebrated their win, Hyderabad’s Adam Gilchrist was very unhappy with the state of the pitch at the Eden Gardens. The Aussie legend told CNN-IBN’s Sukarno Sen in an exclusive chat that the pitch was not fit for cricket.
Adam Gilchrist: We fought really hard. We were defending only 110 but we took it down to just about to the last over. So, we are really thrilled with what we did and brought the Knight Riders down to the wire. It was an entertaining game in the end but a lot of frustrations in the cricket pitch.
CNN-IBN: How was the pitch? Do you think that it was under-prepared? Is this right for the twenty20 matches?
Adam Gilchrist: The pitch was an absolute disgrace. And that doesn't sound right as we have lost the match but it was terrible for the Kolkata team as well. So, it was unfair on the cricketers and unfair on the crowd. It was a close match so, people may say that it was a good result but it was absolutely unfit for cricket.
First couple of balls in Ishant Sharma's over, I thought if we get a 100, we have done really well. It wasn't just up for cricket - it was dangerous, the ball was kicking up to the ribs. The low scoring games are fine but it has to happen on the cricket pitches that suits cricket and that pitch wasn't.
It is the world's richest tournament and they should make sure that they get these things right. So, hopefully everyone can learn from it.
CNN-IBN: There were Australians who were playing in both the teams - you and Andrew Symonds (for Hyderabad) and David Hussey and Ricky Ponting (for Kolkata). But the Australians on one side had won, so didn't you guys reveal the secrets of each other to your respective teams?
Adam Gilchrist: Oh ya! Ricky Ponting was out on the first ball, so that was not a bad start.
