Profile: A very temperamental left-handed batsmen who punches awesome power behind his shots. With very little footwork to boost, Gayle is some sort of an enigma as he has got runs consistently against every top teams in the world in all forms of cricket.
His majestic century off just 79 balls against South Africa at Cape Town in the early 2004 while replying to South Africa’s first innings score of 532 typifies his approach to attacking cricket.
With a career best 317 against South Africa in Antigua, the southpaw came very near to emulating Brian Lara’s world record. Though he does not care much for milestones, he firmly believes in tearing up the opposition bowling with his power packed strokes all round the wicket.
His best season in One-Dayers was the Champions Trophy in India in 2006-2007 season averaging over 40, which included three hundreds and an equal number of half centuries.
Gayle, who is well known for his partnership-breaking ability as a part time bowler, sends down quickish off-spinners, which catches the batsmen by surprise.
The tall Jamaican, who made his ODI debut against India at Toronto on September 11, 1999 is a very tricky customer in Twenty20 cricket.
The opening batsman, who made his Twenty20 debut against New Zealand at Auckland in 2006, has so far played five international matches scoring 193 runs with 117 as his highest score for an average of 32.30 and a fantastic strike rate of 127.27 with a hundred and a fifty to his credit. He has also hit 11 boundaries and 18 sixes. Making him one of the main draws in Kokata team in the IPL tournament commanding a hefty 800,000 US Dollars per year.
He has also managed to take twelve wickets conceding 184 runs off 183 balls and holding six catches from 13 ties, including five Twenty20 internationals, thus qualifying as an all-rounder par excellence.
