In a move that will put it in direct confrontation with the BCCI, Cricket Australia has made it clear that it would not support a total ban on sledging as the existing ICC code of conduct was good enough to deal with the issue. Read The Article

LVISS THE AUSTRALIANS STAND IS UNDERSTANDABLE. THEY CANT BE EXPECTED TO DECRY THEIR OWN INVENTION WHICH HAS SERVED THEM WELL UNTIL THEY GOT SYDNEYED AND PERTHED.IF THE EXISTING LAWS ARE ENOUGH TO CURB IT THEN WHY UMPIRES ARE NOT USING IT TO TONE DOWN THE VOLUME. THE FACT IS AUS MINUS SLEDGING ARE A PATHETIC LOT. THEY NEED IT BADLY TO USE IT WHEN THE NORMAL MODES OF WINNING DONT WORK. IGNORING THEM ,THE ICC SHD GO AHEAD WITH BANNING SLEDGING. IF FOR SOME REASON THEY CANNOT BAN IT ,THEY SHD INTRODUCE HEAVY PENALTY BY WAY OF SLICING THE OFFENDERS MATCH FEE TO 80% NOTHING ELSE WILL WORK. HIT THEM WHERE IT WILL HURT. vik "The CA official argued that even if a total ban is imposed, conflicts related to verbal abuse would be decided only on the basis of the existing code and therefore it was not necessary to completely do away with on-field banter." That argument of his has no merit at all. It''s like he is encouraging the players to put the codes to test.A complete ban will deter players from using offensive language towards opponents and bring back the focus on cricket. If the CA can''t acknowledge this , then obviously they are worried of their team''s performance once sledging is banned.Their argument only highlights the fact that their cricket has more to do with sledging and less with cricket. What a pity that a 3 times worldcup winning team supports an unsportsmanly attitude towards the game. Gaurav Obviously then the answer is more asian umpires who do not dismiss offensive aussie sledging as par for the course. What the aussies consider normal is highly offensive and insulting to Asian ears, but Asian teams complaining to white umpires will not work. Asian umpires hearing the Aussie sledges will know right away what the Asians are upset about. ( Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 19:44 )
Yusuf Good. The next time Indians give the Aussies in kind they should not run to the match referee to complain. ( Posted: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 17:23 )
