What is the best way forward with the Indian cricket team?

The Indian team is at crossroads and the search for talent has never been such a big priority. How do the selectors ensure there is enough experience while trying out youngsters?

Create a ranking system for Indian Cricket Players The present system of selecting the members for Team India is haphazard and unconvincing. The selectors have to go by names, rumors and conjectures. They just hope, and pray with fingers crossed, that the players will perform because they had performed sometime in the past. Some famous names get automatically selected while many players who in fact are better on the field get rejected. The selectors will earn the wrath of the 'pundits' if some names are dropped. Many upcoming players who need to be encouraged and given chance dwindle in neglect and ignominy. The selected ones bask in their past glory, make fame and money and do not deliver. One solution to overcome this situation is to create a ranking among the players on the lines of ICC ranking. For this, their performance in the domestic circle should be taken into account, along with international performance if any. This will encourage senior players to take a keen interest in domestic games also. The ranking should take into consideration all features and facts regarding the player – like right-handed, left-handed, opener, middle order, runs scored, wickets taken, off-spin, leg-spin, fast, medium, performance during the last two years and other similar features. Creating such a ranking system may not be difficult in the modern days of technological development and as we already have a model in ICC ranking. Once this is ready, blatant misappropriation of the ranking cannot be indulged in for favoritism or other considerations. Every time the Indian Team is to be selected, the selectors can easily fall back on this rank list and choose the players depending on their merit and current performance. This will also go a long way in ensuring credibility and avoiding ill-will amongst the players. The selectors will also be able to give the cricket-loving fraternity convincing answers about the mode of selection. The existence of such a list does not mean that the first 15 players in the ranking should be selected. There should be enough openers, left and right handed batsmen, fast and spin bowlers. Each can be selected from the ranking, considering their availability and the exigencies of the Team. The BCCI should be persuaded to think on these lines at the earliest. To fix indian team , indian society has to change. I used to think india is a miracle that can blossom. But now i seriously doubt india will survive. It will be divided after next war with pakistan. Pakistan may be the catalyst for it but the real reason is caste politics in every state. Hinduism has the invisible evil called castism. Hinduism will remain but india will not. At present people do not have enough wealth to challenge what is going on in india. Soon enough people will start to see hypocrisy in indian society and revolt against it. To revert the trend , 1. india has to select young , tall (above 6 ft 2") kids who can play some cricket and train them. 2. we have to keep a limit on how many test (100) and individual can play unless that player can get 90% of votes from all administrators to continue 50 more test. 3.India should continue to play 80% youngsters and 20% old experienced players. 4. India has to create multiple division cricket with 10 teams in each division. if you play well you will promoted to next division. No players should jump unless they have exceptional skills. Gautam Gambhir should be made captain of the Indian Team and Karthick his deputy. We have to groom youngsters and should sack Sachin and Sourav. For how long will we continue to live on past performances. Gautam Gambhir has been a terrific performer and has an excellent temparement and should lead both the ODI and Test squad. My ODI Squad would be Gambhir (C) Uthappa Dravid Tewari Sharma Dhoni Karthick(WK) Powar Sreeshanth Munaf Ranadeb Bose In the Tests, Jaffer can come in for Uthappa. (Posted: May 19, 2007, 10:37 pm)

Yes, it seems as usual. All is forgotten and forgiven. Inspite of such a disastrous show by Inida, no one is ready to accept the blame and taken harsh decisions. Everyone takes their place for granted and there have been no resignations. This is in sharp contrast to Pakistan where all players contracts have been scrapped. When will we take harsh decisions and sack Tendular, Ganguly, Agarkar and co. (Posted: May 19, 2007, 10:36 pm)

Sorry guys I couldn't get into the site because it kept collapsing!!! Anyway, to respond to the replies, there should be wholesale changes, reasons being, the seniors are not making runs, and the most important thing in cricket as you guys know is CONSISTENCY. You cannot go on a barren run like Shewag and expect to be in the side when there are other youngsters knocking on the door. The only way forward is to get rid of the senior players who don't perform, also note this point : senior players who have contracts with advertisement companies to stay at the wicket for their own sake and forget the everything else. I was a big Ganguly fan when he was in form and leading from the front, you need captains like that. Unfortunately he showed his true colours with the Greg Chappell spate by not letting go when needed, then we had the Ganguly fans asking why he wasn't picked and so on... this I'm afraid is a typical Indian fan mentailty of remembering the old times and expecting the same from the person in every match to score runs, thats not going to happen you guys know it and so do I. Yet the seniors think differently, they think as long as they are in the team Irrespective whether they score runs or not what they'ev done in the past is enough for them to continue in the team. Unfortunately a majority of the senior players excluding Dravid think in this way. Hence the whole sale changes. Some asked why I didn't include Uthappa to be dropped from my list reason being is he was not given a proper chance in opening because of people like Tendulkar and Ganguly hogging the opening role. Whether BCCI find anything from the contacts with advertisers is another thing, but with the whole sale changes will instigate a sense of shock and fear into the other players who think at the moment they have nothing to worry about and there's no competiton against them for place in the team. A quick note I still think the selection committee should be sacked they are a bunch of Jokers!!(Posted: April 29, 2007, 5:27 pm)

What's key here is rational thinking, long term vision and refraining from a wholesale changes. The emotions, embarrassments and annoyance caused by the infamous indian early exit from 2007 world cup, is making most people and critics to desert rational thinking and most seem to let their emotional thinking overpower their thought process. This can be dangerous if not managed well. In my opinion, we must persist with Tendulkars and Gangulys for some more time, till able replacements are found. However the selection and retention of players should be purely on merits and performance. Each player should be clearly assigned his role, responsibility and performance targets within the team. And the assesments of players should be against these set targets. Selections based on regional/race/religious preferences should be absolutely abolished. Players like Mohd Kaif are the future of Indian Cricket and should be persisted with. Under coaches like Dave Whatmore or Tom Moody, with excellent track record, players like mohd kaif will certainly bloom into excellent peformers for India. (Posted: April 29, 2007, 10:40 am)

OK I cannot believe what I'm reading down this forum some of you guys need to get a serious reality check!! One person here is saying things like M/s Tendulkar should of opened with Ganguly etc and its not Ganguly's fault for going slow, and then its all Greg Chapell's fault. Guys you need to wake up big time!!! This is the mess Indian cricket is in because of Tendulkar and Ganguly and their mafia group. To go forward in the bestway for Indian cricket. Firstly somebody with a business acum has to take over from Pawar and his clowns. The whole of BCCI have to resign now. Then all the selectors have to be sacked, including the micro intelligent Vengsarkar ( he has got to be the most useless ex cricketer ) Tendulkar, Ganguly, Shewag, Y.singh, Dhoni, M.patel, Z Khan SHOULD BE DROPPED from the Indian team for good , as the oldies don't want go gracefully, Dravid keeps his place but scrap the captaincy from him. We need younger people in the team . A brand new Board and three professional selectors not a bunch of clowns. Continue with V prasad as the bowling coach and Robin Singh as the fielding coach. The main coach should be Tom Moody , there is not a single Indian or ex-cricketer who can do this job properly, we seen the disasters, like Madan Lal, etc. In the Ranji Trophy all the pitches should balanced 60% batsmen 40% bowlers, you might matches finishing in 3 days then. Then the under 19 Indian team, under 15 team, and under 11 team should be on regular overseas trips for test matches and one dayers. We don't need politicians or clowns or Jokers or a bunch of mafia men who earn money at the public's expense not playing cricket. All of those cricketers can stay in first class until they retire or go find something else. (Posted: April 27, 2007, 1:54 am)

At last the selectors have seen the wisdom of taking tough decisions.some of the seniors have been dropped.the only way forward is to inculcate a fitness regime.anybody who cannot field or run between wickets has no place in ODIs. (Posted: April 24, 2007, 4:49 pm)

Well if Indian Cricket Control board want to change mind set of player they should use corporate lathi.... like they should issue shares of each team member...and the players performance shall raise or down their share in the market. The top 11 shares shall be play in the team. In this way ICC will able to raise funds and keep players running for themselves and for country.... HOWSSSSSS THAT ?(Posted: April 24, 2007, 2:44 pm)

the way forward .... its going to be tough... but if the bcci really wants to do it, the vote politics should be kept aside... get senior players to work with the system players like kapil, sunil, shashtri, prasanna, venkatraghvan should be asked suggestions. Every one is asking for the bcci to reduce the number of teams in ranji cricket but... to no avail... who has the guts to dissapoint state associations and lose votes. if today gujarat was just one team instead of three i m sure it would be a more strronger team and the competition would be more tougher... if the bcci cannot do this atleast try and make another league like the duleep trophy the more important tournament where there are only 5 teams.... so that only the cream players play each other. duleep trophy should have more matches and ranji less matches... make sure all the international players play the duleep trophy... get foreign coaches and fielding coaches like john wright, jonty rhodes, shane warne, steve waugh etc to work with our A teams or our under 19 teams.... give them the best coaches... We need to decrease the gap between domestic cricket and international cricket... when a player is selected for australia he just has to prove he deserves his place in the team he doesnt have to prove he has talent because he has already proved it in the domestic competition.when some one is selected in india he has to prove he can also handle fast bowling. he has to prove he is able to play international cricket.also limit the number of matches. max 30 onedays in a year and only 10 test matches. but will they sacrifice the money.why we play so much with bangladesh, zimbabve, kenya i dont know.because our bcci needs votes for icc presidentship. mr pawar is more interested in that. how many times does australia play these teams. to become the best will take time but are we even ready to take these steps.only individual talent of speial players has taken us so far but for being the best the bcci needs to act!!!(Posted: April 20, 2007, 6:30 pm)
