A keen student of the game V Veera Kumar represented Maharaja’s College, Mysore, in cricket. But he found his calling in writing, rather than playing, cricket. He has covered all major cricket tournaments, including Reliance World Cup. Some of the cricketing greats he has interviewed include Ajit Wadekar, Nari Contractor, Sandeep Patil, G R Vishwanath, Vivian Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath and Sachin Tendulkar.

It was indeed a bold decision by the Indian selectors to rest stalwarts – Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly – for the three one-dayers during the tour to Bangladesh next month. Surprisingly, the cricket loving public in the country have taken this decision pretty sportingly, unlike when there was vociferous protests by the public and the politicians alike, in Bengal particularly, when former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly was dropped from the Indian team during coach Greg Chappell’s reign. Now the stage seems to be set to drop all the senior players in the team and infuse young blood for the forthcoming tour of Bangladesh as if this move alone would propel the team to become the world champions. Strange are the ways of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) functioning especially after India’s debacle in the on-going World Cup.
