A keen student of the game V Veera Kumar represented Maharaja’s College, Mysore, in cricket. But he found his calling in writing, rather than playing, cricket. He has covered all major cricket tournaments, including Reliance World Cup. Some of the cricketing greats he has interviewed include Ajit Wadekar, Nari Contractor, Sandeep Patil, G R Vishwanath, Vivian Richards, Sunil Gavaskar, Wasim Akram, Glenn McGrath and Sachin Tendulkar.

Watching India’s cricket matches is not for the weak-hearted as they have a tendency to make heavy weather of what should be easy wins. The 14-run win against the West Indies at Nagpur was no exception as the West Indies opener Shivnarine Chanderpaul tore into the Indian attack with an unbeaten century (149) and threatened to take away the first tie of the four-match series. The time has come for the International Cricket Council(ICC) to make clear that racist remarks are not acceptable on the cricket field. South African cricketers have often been found transcending the levels of sledging and one only hopes that Herschelle Gibbs’ two-Test ban for racist remarks on Pakistani fans during the first Test match stays. Why is the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) talking about renewing Indian coach Greg Chappell’s contract even before the start of the World Cup?
